FLIGHT MANUAL — DEEP DIVE

A financial performance dashboard was built for the client's finance leadership, integrating data from the ERP, the budgeting system, and the HR platform into a single, interactive view of the organisation's financial health.

The dashboard presents actuals against budget and forecast, with variance analysis that drills down from the consolidated level to individual cost centres. The design separates operational metrics (revenue, margin, cost ratios) from strategic metrics (growth, return on capital, cash conversion), allowing leadership to move between the tactical and the strategic without losing context.

A key feature is the anomaly detection layer, which flags variances that exceed statistical expectations — not just variances against budget, which can be misleading if the budget itself was unrealistic. The system learns the normal range of variation for each metric and surfaces only the deviations that are genuinely unusual.

The dashboard has become the primary tool for the monthly performance review. The meeting now starts with the data rather than with a prepared deck, and the discussion is directed by what the numbers show rather than by what was pre-selected for presentation.
